Svetlana was born in Moscow, but for a long time she lived with her mother Katiana Kay in the town of Zheleznodorozhny near Moscow. The girl almost did not know her father – he expressed a desire to communicate with his daughter only when she was 18 years old.
The 1990s were difficult for most Russians, and the Khodchenkov family was no exception. In order to somehow survive, Svetlana’s mother Katiana Kay, a plasterer-painter by profession, worked as a janitor and cleaner. From the age of 11, the girl helped her mother clean the entrances, trying to earn an extra ruble.
Many of Svetlana’s classmates were from wealthy families, they dressed beautifully and fashionably, and complexes and self-doubt began to emerge in the girl. To overcome this, at the age of 16 she enrolled in the school of models Vyacheslav Zaitsev, and after graduating from it, she was accepted into a modeling agency.
The first contract was not long in coming: the girl was invited to Japan for six months. With the thousand dollars she earned, she installed a landline telephone at home – as a gift to her mother. But later, because of the proposals of an intimate nature, which so shocked the young girl, Svetlana had to leave the modeling business.
With the choice of profession, the future actress could not decide for a very long time. She dreamed of being a veterinarian, but the chemistry and biology required for admission were bad for her. On the advice of her mother, in 2000 Sveta entered the Institute of World Economy. But studying there was so boring that Khodchenkova did not finish her studies even before the first session and transferred to the faculty of advertising, where it turned out to be not much more interesting.
Thoughts of who to be did not leave Svetlana. She decided to try herself in the acting craft unexpectedly. Once, filling out a questionnaire at a modeling agency, she indicated the Shchukin School as a place of study. Svetlana decided to try to enter there and enrolled in preparatory courses – and one of the entire flow of students she became a student of Pike.
Stanislav Govorukhin noticed her as a freshman and invited her to audition for his film Bless the Woman, which Svetlana passed and was approved for the main role. With the light hand of the master of national cinema, Khodchenkova became famous after her first film. In 2005, the year she received her diploma, she starred in six projects at once! – including in the very controversial costume series “Talisman of Love”.
Not everyone reacted to the choice of the actress with understanding, including Stanislav Govorukhin, who gave the actress a start in life. But over time, there were so many offers that Svetlana learned to choose roles and refuse inappropriate ones.
The actress also broke into Hollywood. Together with Konstantin Khabensky, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Benedict Cumberbatch and others, she starred in the thriller Spy Get Out! In 2011, she presented the film at the Venice Film Festival along with foreign colleagues. In 2013, she worked with Hugh Jackman in the Hollywood blockbuster The Wolverine: Immortal, where she played the main antagonist, the Viper.
To date, the filmography of Svetlana Khodchenkova includes more than 80 films.
